Summary on Grant Application Form |
In order to manage highly polluted estuaries and coastal areas, the concentration of PAH released from polluted sediments needs to be predicted. This involves time-dependent PAH sorption/desorption on sediment particles, turbulent mixing of sediments and water near the bed and long term morphological changes. These effects will be investigated in a laboratory experimental programme. PAH fluxes will be measured by chemical analysis using GC (Gas Chromatography) and HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography). The important effect of turbulence on PAH fluxes will be determined by measuring flow and sediment behaviour with LDV, ADV and micro-PTV. A function will be constructed to represent various physical factors for incorporation into numerical models for water quality prediction.
