Strategic plans for the management of our coasts rely implicitly upon an understanding of the physical processes which shape coastal morphology. Models used in current practice do not forecast accurately the evolution of coastal morphology over periods of the order of planning horizons (50-70 years). We wish to develop a methodology that improves long term forecasting of coastal morphology. The high level of user interest is reflected in the contributions of the collaborating parnters.The research will use a high quality data set of seabed surveys. An existing industry-standard tidal model will be extended to calculate tidal flow statistics not usually computed in the course of engineering studies. Then measures of the contribution of the tidal hydrodynamics to potential sediment movement will be developed. The results of the calculations will be reviewed against published analyses of the sandbank morphology. On the basis of earlier research, it is anticipated that there will be identifiable correlations between the flow statistics and the morphology, leading to an improved understanding of the processes important in the evolution of nearshore morphology.Results will be presented through conferences and journals, and should lead to better-informed decision-making for development in coastal zones, in the UK and overseas.
