Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to develop analogue design techniques and circuit and system architectures for the integration of the peripheral column driver circuitry onto the glass substrate for active matix liquid crystal displays and sensors. The circuits will be constructed using thin film transistors (TFTs), since these devices are already present at each pixel location, and thus no additional processing steps will be required. The emphasis will be on the use of poly-silicon (poly-Si) as the thin film semiconducting material. The polycrystalline nature of the semiconductor leads to significant variations in device characteristics (such as threshold voltage), meaning that even adjacent transistors may not have closely-matched characteristics. This presents a challenge when designing analogue/mixed signal circuits, since conventional single-crystal silicon MOSFET designs which rely on controlled or matched device characteristics will not perform well using thin-film technology. This research therefore aims to develop a library of basic analogue circuit building technology. This research therefore aims to develop a library of basic analogue circuit building blocks which meet the required performance criteria in terms of noise, resolution, speed and power consumption. These circuits will then be combined to implement higher-level functions required to drive the AMLDC.
