Summary on Grant Application Form |
In this project a new class of 3D membrane-catalyst-electrodes (MCE) will be produced. Their properties will be characterised and their performance measured and compared to existing fuel cell electrodes.High surface area membranes will be prepared by casting novel polymer materials against pre-formed three dimensional high interfacial surface area substrates. The membranes will be catalysed using two different processes. The resulting materials will be characterised and assembled into electrodes for testing in 1/2 cells under fuel cell operating conditions. Results will be compared with modelling studies carried out in parallel. Modelling of the response of this interface will provide valuable information about the competing processes occurring and permit the transport (ionic, diffusion, electronic) of the new systems to be determined, and optimisations to the structures made.
