we request a surface plasmon resonance instrument (BIAcore) that will be dedicated to supporting a range of engineering-focussed projects sitting at the interface between chemical engineering and the life sciences. The instrument will support existing projects funded by the EPSRC, BBSRC, and other sources. These projects address three main areas. The first focusses on the development of novel biomaterials based on the adsorption of self-associated peptides from solution. This is a relatively new area, started by Dr Middelberg when he was a Fulbright fellow at UC Berkeley in 1998. The second focusses on fundamental studies into cell attachment and detatchment, for waste treatment via biofilms and for mammalian cell separations, and builds on 14 years of work into expanded beds by Dr Chase. The third focusses on novel reactor technology for protein processing, building on 10 years of work by Dr Middelberg. Each project area will be significantly enhanced by access to a BIAcore instrument. The instrument will also be used to develop new projects within these areas. Additionally, new projects focussed on fundamental chromatographic studies (Dr Chase) and DNA-based systems for information storage (Dr Middelberg and Professor Pepper) will be developed.
