Summary on Grant Application Form
Funding is requested to initiate a world class network that brings together scientific disciplines from engineering and life sciences from both the UK and internationally to bring about transfer of ideas into engineering, as a result of the increasing momentum of activity in marine biotechnology at Heriot-Watt University. The Network members will meet quarterly across the UK, with additional members, both academic and industrial, being invited. A broader-based International Strategic Workshop is to be held annually.Research Objectives:- Development of new bio-reactor and downstream processing facilities for marine bioproducts.- To improve understanding of bio-chemical engineering technologies applied to the exploitation of novel marine microorganisms, antifouling compounds antibiotics and polymers such as marine biodhesives. The overall objective of this programme, within 3 years, is to build a Network of scientists with the critical mass necessary to allow the network to become self-sustaining and to contribute new engineering technologies and materials derived from breakthroughs in the field of marine biotechnology. The Heriot-Watt based centre will be one of the foremost of its kind in the world.
