Summary on Grant Application Form |
In this programme we will develop a semi-empirical method for the prediction of hydrodynamic loads on offshore wind turbine towers under the combined effects of current and free surface waves. To achieve this objective we will combine the expertise from previous work in Marine CFD with experiments in a laboratory wave tank on an elastically mounted vertical cylinder. Tests will be conducted in waves and in currents simulated by towing the cylinder. The project will extend the method to full scale by using additional data from large scale experiments. The results will be used to examine the implications of water depth on monopole towers for offshore wind turbines.
