Summary on Grant Application Form |
The design of a tidal farm or equivalently the lay-out of its tidal turbines in space, should maximise the energy output of the machines as well as their life-time. Both issues are basically associated with the development and interaction of wakes downstream of the tidal turbines. The wake effects phenomena take place in a 3D turbulent flow environment affected by the relief of the sea bed and the free surface of the sea. In this project, due to its complexity, the full problem will be decomposed into intermediate ones which will be investigated separately: (a) the local tidal stream velocity field without the presence of the tidal turbines, (b) the single wake problem and (c) the wake interactions problem. For these problems appropriate models will be developed and tested. In parallel an experimental campaign will be carried out for the evaluation and tunning of the models. For various tidal stream conditions, the velocity field will be measured at a number of downstream positions for a single and a double wake of turbine simulators in a water tank. The above models will then be incorporated as modules into the complete optimal design tool.
