Summary on Grant Application Form |
Elastic localisation of buckle patterns is of practical importance to engineers. Long uniform structures are susceptible to such post-buckling behaviour when an unstable form of initial buckling is present and such localisation then provides the most severe loss of stability. The heuristic model of an elastic strut resting on an elastic foundation has been extensively studied for the case when the buckled path continues to fall monotonically from the critical point. However, studies of the more realistic case where the path initially falls and then restabilises have been few. In the proposed research we intend to study restabilisation initially with an extension to the strut model and then to use the methods to study the important cases of localised buckling of the elastica resting on a linear foundation and the localisation of buckling which is observed after ovalisation (the Brazier effect) in bent tubes. The results will be of interest to other researchers in the fields of aeronautical and structural engineering, mechanics and applied mathematics. Direct application to industrial problems eg the analysis and design of pipelines is not envisaged but the studies will, it is hoped, shed new light on such practical problems as well.
