The high viscosity of zone ionic liquids will prevent the full exploitation of the opportunities in chemicals processing offered by these materials. We seek to circumvent such restrictions by the use of a membrane reactor (which permits the increase in reaction rate or selectivity of a reaction by selective addition of a reactant of removal of a product) in which an ionic liquid is dispersed in a suitable polymer. The research will identify, characterise and develop hydrogenation-catalyst-ionic liquid-polymer combinations. These will be formed into corrugated ionic-liquid polymer membranes (ILPMs). The performance of these ILPMs will be investigated in a pilot alkene or arene hydrogenation rig designed and constructed for the purpose.EngProg\
