Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will investigate the integration of a range of micro-electro-mechanical components - in particular switches, and out-of-plane inductors and antennas - on monolithic microwave integrated circuits. This will bring added functionality as well as improved performance to such circuits, with important applications in civilian and defense radar systems, and telecomms. The approach will be based on post-processing of active circuits, making use of monolithic and hybrid assembly techniques originated at Imperial College. These techniques are based respectively on self-assembly by surface tension powered rotation, and laser-assisted manipulation of components. Compatibility with Si and GaAs substrates will be maintained by the use of low temperature, surface attachment and micromachining processes, including electroforming. To illustrate the capabilities of the new technology, the following system demonstrators will be implemented:- a dual-band (900/1800 MHz) lumped-element filter;- a switched-diversity sectored antenna;- a micromehcnaical phase shifter.
