Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project will investigate the integration of a wide range of micro-electro-mechanical components - in particular switches, and out-of-plate inductors and antennas - on monolithic microwave integrated circuits. This will bring added functionality as well as improved performance to such circuits; with important applications in civilian and defence radar systems, and telecomms. The approach will be based on integration by in-situ fabrication, and self-assembly by surface tension powered rotation, a technique originated at Imperial College. Compatibility with Si and GaAs substrates will be maintained by the use of low temperature, surface attachment and micromachining processes, including electroforming. To illustrate the capabilities of the new technology, the following system demonstrators will be implemented:* a dual-band (900/1800 MHz) lumped-element filter;* a switched-diversity sectored antenna;* a micromechnical phase shifter.
