Summary on Grant Application Form
This project aims to address fundamental issues associated with arc motion in low and medium voltage switchgear. The research will make use of an established test system and experimental methodology. The system consists of a solid state imaging system and flexible test apparatus. The work will follow on from a previous project where cathode root processes were investigated using a newly defined parameter for the measurement of arc root motion. The complexity of anode root motion was also identified. The investigations were limited to a limited definition of variables, using a Taguchi analysis. In this application the investigation will be extended to consider some key parameters on both the anode and cathode root. Anode root processes are poorly understood, and will be the initial focus of the research. The experimental investigations are directly applicable to a range of switching devices. The project will also allow for the development of computer simulations or arc motion.
