It is recognised that 'more-electric' aircraft engines can offer significant commercial, operational and environmental advantages compared to conventional aircraft engines equipped with externally mounted electrical generators, starter motors, and hydraulic pumps and fuel pumps driven via take-off shafts and gearboxes. It is proposed to investigate alternative power generation and distribution architectures for managing the power flow and load optimisation; to undertake fundamental research on key enabling technologies which will facilitate the realisation of aircraft equipped with 'more-electric' engines, viz alternative types and topologies of motor/generator, magnetic bearings, and associated power and control electronic systems, which are compatible with the restricted space and the harsh environment in gas-turbine engines; and to embody the research findings in a brass-board technology demonstrator. The demonstrator will verify the functionality of embedded machines and magnetic bearings under conditions which simulate the various power flow modes and the operating environment, under both healthy and fault conditions.
