Summary on Grant Application Form |
A new reactor concept, termed the slug flow reactor, will be investigated. The reactor will use sequential well defined pulses (or slugs) of reactants and will be investigated for oxidation and hydrogenation reactions in this initial study. The main aim is to use this strategy to improve the reaction selectivity for those reactions by controlling the processes that lead to total oxidation or hydrogenation. The reactor will involve the necessary valving to introduce sequential pulses in a continuous manner of both gas phase and liquid phase reactants. The oxidation of crotyl alcohol, aromatic compounds and propene to propene oxide, plus hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehydes and ketones will be studied as test reactions, these being selected as they represent reactions where significant improvements in reaction selectivity are required. It is anticipated that the approach will be of generic application to other heterogeneously catalysed reactions.EngProg\
