Both ionic liquids and supercritical C02 represent two classes of environmentally benign solvents for various chemical reactions, materials processing and separations. In combination, they offer fascinating possibilitis. The major advantage of ionic liquids is that they have extremely low-vapour pressure which makes them useful media for liquid-phase reaction chemistry. However, separation of the products of these reactions from reactants, catalyst and solvent itself is a siginificant challenge. Supercritical C02 could potentially be utilised to extract and separate the products from ionic liquids. We propose to undertake fundamental study of the solubility of C02 in various ionic liquids and also the partitioning of organic substances between the ionic liquids and supercritical C02 phases. We propose to synthesise a series of ionic liquids and to develop new spectroscopic methods to obtain information that will form a valuable basis for combining these two classes of environmentally benign solvents for reactions and separations.
