Summary on Grant Application Form
The development of carbon loaded polymer resistor volumetric sensors and quartz crystal microbalance sensors has led to a novel and powerful method of discriminating between analytes in the gas phase by determining the density. At present the instrumentation required to work these sensors is bulky. There are a great many analytical advantages to developing integrated instruments to yield a compact and cheap field operable device for use in point-of-care disgnostics and industry, amongst other applications. In this programme we will develop several key components including micro-sensors and integrated instruments using state-of-the-art design techniques for maximum functionality and low power consumption. The circuits will be developed as intellectual property blocks suitable for reuse in other bioanalytical techniques. This will facilitate the construction of arrays that are essentially for precision discrimination between analytes. A testbench will also be developed using computer controlled data acquisition and analysis. In addition to enabling full test of the proposed devices and circuits, this will facilitate future system-on-a-chip development of integrated olfactory sensors that will integrate a signal processor with the instruments.
