Summary on Grant Application Form |
NbTi alloys are very expensive when considering the cost and availability of the raw oxide materials. An analysis of existing processes shows that, by far, the greatest cost is associated with the extraction and production costs. A novel route is proposed whereby a mixture of the oxide precursors is made the cathode in a fused salt cell. Under the cathodic potential the oxygen is removed from the oxide, leaving the metals, which alloy together. The oxygen ions are discharged at the anode in the form of oxygen or carbon dioxide. This offers a much simpler, more environmentally favourable, and far cheaper than existing methods. The feasibility and the mechanism of this novel method of reduction will be investigated.
