Summary on Grant Application Form |
A robust, non-toxic gold electrodeposition process will be developed which can be exploited in the fields of microelectronics and bio-materials. The process is based on a sulfite-thiosulfate electrolyte without any additives. This facilitates process control and scale up. In addition this will minimise solid and liquid waste generated. In order to do this, the stability of the sulfite-thiosulfate ligand system will be examined. The composition and pH where the electrolyte yeilds gold deposits at a high current efficiency will be ascertained. Deposit properties such as uniformify, ductility, grain size, etc. will be tailored by changing electrochemical and engineering parameters. In particular, the effect of fluid hydrodynamics, current (or potential) wave form, and electrolyte pH/temperature will be studied. The robustness of the process will then be tested under laboratory and industrial operating conditions.
