We will probe the effect of the hydrophobe on the association properties of water-soluble hydrophobically modified (HM) polymers. Conditions for maximum viscosity enhancement will be identified. A range of HM polyacrylamides will be synthesized by free radical micellar polymerization, where the hydrophobe is solubilized in micelles within the aqueous solution. The statistical copolymer chains will comprise 1-5% hydrophobe in short blocks. The hydrophobicity of these blocks will be controlled through the monomer chemistry, and the sequence length, the latter depending on solubilization in micelles. The flow properties of aqueous solutions will be studied by rheology. The effect of hydrophobe on the viscosity will be examined. Shear thinning and thickening effects will be correlated to solution structure. Small-angle x-ray scattering will be used to determine the network structure and to examine possible microphase separation as a function of solution concentration. Theory will be developed for the structure of the solutions, leading to predictions for the effect of length and polydispersity of hydrophobic sequences on structure, and for the association number. The results will be compared to, and fed back into experiments. Theory for the flow properties, both linear and non-linear will similar be designed to account for the experimental results.
