Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal concerns the synthesis and guest exchange chemistry of new framework solids based on transition metal coordination polymers, using a range of bulk characterisation techniques. We recently prepared two new chiral frameworks (with up to 50% accessible void volume) based on coordination of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate (btc) to Ni and templated by an alcohol. Homochiral samples of these phases will be prepared and their guest exchange chemistry examined, including an assessment of their suitability for racemate resolution in collaboration with Merck. The synthesis of related phases to optimise stability and exchange characterisation will be undertaken. Further insight into the sorptive properties of moelcular frameworks is offered by metal - 4,4'-bipy polymers, where we have recently solved both solvated and desolvated framework structures by single crystal X-ray methods. This make s a detailedstudy of the guest exchange chemistry timely, combining diffraction with C MASNMR studies of both guest and framework dynamics.
