Summary on Grant Application Form |
There is an increasing demand from industry for the use of composites, particularly in the motor industry where combinations of high strength, lightness and corrossion resistance is required. However, the continued expansion in their use is under threat due to the lack of identifiable recycling routes. This is compounded by EC and UK Government directives which prioritise recycling. This proposal seeks to develop the recycling process for composites by combining pyrolysis to liberate the composite components with physical separation processes to achieve recyclable materials. The pyrolysis process is to be developed through the investigation of selective waste mixing and the use of waste diluents to target the yield and properties of the end products. Pyrolysis gas recycling via a catalytic oxidiser will be investigated to enable the minimising of input inert gas. The evaluation of specific identifiable end-uses for the products, linked to the industrial partners will be determined.
