The proposed research presents an integrated approach to the design of next-generation process modelling technology.Emphasis is placed on mechanisms that will allow the detailed modelling of the effects of processing conditions and equipment geometry on process performance and end-product quality. The ability to describe the interactions of fluid dynamics with other phenomena is seen as especially important in this context, and so is the effecgive exploitation of recent advances in estimation of physical properties of complex materials and computational chemistry.The limited availability of basic kinetic, thermodynamic and mass transfer data is currently one of the major bottlenecks in process modelling. The proposed research aims at removing this via the tighter integration of laboratory expeirmentation within the overlal model development activity.Much of the benefit from process modelling currently arises from the application of formal optimisation techniques to detailed process models for the solution of a wide variety of process design and operations problems. Accordingly, the proposed research is concerned with the development of novel techniques for global optimisation of steady-state and dynamic problems.
