Summary on Grant Application Form |
The UK Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT) will mount a reconnaissance mission to the 20 September 1999 Ji-Ji, Taiwan earthquake. A team of up to 9 earthquake engineers, including 5 academics will spend about 7 days in the disaster zone from 5 October 99. Meetings with local experts and officials will take place on arrival with the objective of establishing the most appropriate areas to study. The team will review damage in Taipei and then leave for the centre of the island where most of the damage is located. The team will divide as appropriate to study different aspects of the damage, thereby ensuring good coverage. Data will be collected on specific failures, including detailed photographs, measurements, any technical documents that can be obtained locally etc. The data will be added to the Cambridge seismic database, which already includes much useful data obtained on previous EPSRC supported missions eg to the Newcastle, Australia earthquake in 1989. On return to the UK, a presentation of the team's initial findings will be made to the Institute of Structural Engineers, and the Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics. A full EEFIT field report will be completed within 8 months.
