Summary on Grant Application Form
An investigation of the high-resolution infrared spectra of XF3.F2 (X = N, P) complexes is proposed. These systems are of particular interest since they represent local minima on the potential-energy surface for the XF3 + F2 reaction and their study will provide an insight into the formation of pentavalent N and P centres. Although many species containing five-coordinate P centres have been isolated, no compound with an equivalent five-coordinate N centre has yet been synthesised. Vibrational frequencies for both the intra- and intermolecular modes will give an indication of the strength and nature of the interaction. Determination of bond lengths and angles will also enable any steric requirements to be considered. Assignment and interpretation of the spectra will be aided by performing theoretical calculations. Comparison of the two systems will help to explain the different propensity of N and P to form pentavalent compounds.Funding is requested for equipment to develop an existing spectrometer. The improvements will provide sufficient sensitivity for the detection of complexes such as those described. The complexes will be formed by coexpansion in a pulsed fast-mixing nozzle. Sensitivity will be maximised by using a multipass laser beam arrangement, as well as rapid-scanning and lock-in detection methods.
