Summary on Grant Application Form
Polyazapolycyclic Aromatic Compounds PAPAC have been synthesised and proven to be highly mutagenic. We propose to synthesise more and to use these compounds as models to search for their presence in diesel engine emissions, collected from a Perkins Prima 21 DI engine using the novel TESSA solvent extraction technique. The search will involve fractionation of polar exhaust fractions by HPLC, standard addition of mutagenic PAPAC and assay by GC and GC-MS methods.Fuels of widely ranging aromatic content, but similar cetane number, will be employed in the diesel engine run under a range of speed and load conditions.
