The influence of alloy composition and processing on the phase constitution, microstructures and magnetic properties of nanophase, melt spun Didymium (Nd-Pr)-Fe-B hard magnetic alloys will be systematically investigated. Both stoichiometric and nanocomposite compositions will be studied, by varying the Pr:Nd ratio in the former case and both the Pr:Nd and (Pr+Nd):Fe ratios in the latter case. The main aims are: (i) to investigate the enhancement of coercivity when Pr is substituted for Nd, on the basis that Pr2Fe14B has a larger anisotropy field than Nd2Fe14B. Particular emphasis will be placed on the nanocomposite alloys, in which the coercivity is adversely affected for large volume fractions of soft magnetic phase at high Fe:RE ratios, in an attempt to improve the thermal stabilities of exchange enhanced alloys.(ii) to investigate the structures and properties obtained by full overquenching followed by anneal devitrification in order to attempt to achieve combinations of exchange enhanced remanence and coercivity comparable with those that are obtained by direct quenching to the nanocrystalline state. Cobalt substitutions for Fe, to further enhance thermal stability, and processing of polymer bonded magnets, based on selected compositions, to demonstrate the commercial viability of the alloys, will also be included.
