Summary on Grant Application Form
We shall develop a range of rare-earth doped, microstructured air:glass fibres and exploit their unique properties in novel fibre laser and amplifier systems specific targets will be a) dual-clad fibres with an internal air:glass interface and correspondingly high numerical-aperture outer cladding, (providing increased pump intensities, improved pump absorption and reduced physical lengths for cladding pumped fibre devices), and b) ytterbium doped fibre with complex air:glass microstructuring to define unique core and inner cladding mode guidance characteristics (e.g. large mode areas for high energy storage, anomalous dispersion for soliton mode-locking, large birefringence for polarisation maintaining operation).
