Summary on Grant Application Form
Ferroelectric microdisplays and light valves can handle data at GHz rates yet will cost little in mass production. We will combine them to make two very high resolution display demonstrators; a 3D video display with a wide field of view, and a low cost laser print resolution A4 video display. The 3D video display will us a large light valve which will be synchronised frame to frame with a microdisplay so that the combination acts as a high frame rate liquid crystal display. Views of a three dimensional image will be screened one by one on the light valve, and each view will be illuminated by rays of light travelling in a direction exclusive to that view, so that when integrated over one sixtieth of a second the whole synthesises a three dimensional image. The A4 video display will be projected from a light valve, itself addressed by a microdisplay. Images of the microdisplay will be replicated across the light valves photosenor, and the photosensor electrically activated under one replicated image at a time so as to time multiplex a high resolution projected image. We plan that such cheap, high resolution video displays will break that IT bottleneck : the human/machine interface.
