The probabilistic assessment of structural integrity is only possible if adequate data is available regarding the statistical distribution of the uncertain variables. Often this is not the case, and a new family of possibilistic (or non-probabilistic) methods has been developed in recent years, including interval analysis, convex modelling, and fuzzy set theory. Progress in probabilistic and possibilistic methods has tended to occur independently; however, recent work by the investigators has shown that both approaches can be encompassed by a number of common algorithms. This work will be exploited and extended here to develop a new design tool whereby structural integrity can be assessed regardless of the nature of the available data - statistical, possibilistic (For example bounds), or a combination of the two. This tool will then be applied to optimal design, so that integrity can be maximised subject to certain performance constraints, or conversely performance can be maximised subject to integrity constraints. This will involve the development of a novel optimal design algorithm that is compatible with the new assessment procedure.
