Summary on Grant Application Form |
Previous research conducted at the IAC in collaboration with National Power has demonstrated the usefulness of laser Raman spectroscopic technique for the characterisation of thermal barrier coatings on gas turbine blades in terms of surface chemistry, crystallographic structure and stress state. The proposed research is intended to develop and validate this technique for in-situ examination of rotor blades at CCGT power stations. A fibre optic probe which allows access to different areas of the blade in the turbine will be constructed and coupled to a portable Raman spectrometer. Raman analysis data will be collected from retired blades and from blades in service in addition to experimental blade samples to assess the reliability of Raman analysis and provide useful data for life assessment of blade components.
