Professionals involved in the exploitation of pultruded glass reinforced plastic profiles in primary load-bearing construction and aware that the key factors impending growth rate are: the lack of scientific understanding of joint strength prediction and joint failure progression, the paucity of relevant independent joint test data and the absence of reliable guidance for their design. The aim is to make progress towards the removal of these impediments to growth by acquiring the underpinning scientific knowledge via a rational programme of bolted joint tests and analyses, and by developing current design guidance to involve SI methodology. Tests will be conducted on joints representative of current practice and field conditions. These tests will contribute to the development of a database, including previous test results. A major part of the project is concerned with interaction of stress and damage progression modelling to provide accurate strength predictions for design calculations. This is required because conventional formulae and the rigorous approach in the EUROCOMP Design Code are likely to give misleading predictions for joint resistance.
