|
The goal of Mass Customisation (MC) is to manufacture customised products using mass production principles. This project will provide a knowledge base to underpin mass customisation, developed from empirical evidence, theoretical analysis and modelling. Tools will be developed to: assess the business case for adopting mass customisation, to choose the most appropriate customisation strategies and to aid the design of operational systems. key research goal is to understand theoretically and empirically the consequences for an extended manufacturing enterprise of accepting large amounts of front end variety. Using modelling, simulation and expert analysis, carefully selected pilot studies on MC will be introduced to participating organisations. The results of the pilot studies will demonstrate how to understand and solve the operational problems of introducing, managing and delivering mass customisation. The findings will be widely disseminated through the project partners, with the help of workbooks, advice-giving systems and a professionally maintained web site. By providing a repository of exploitable expertise, models and tools, the consortium will lay the foundations for manufacturing businesses in the UK to make a step change in their approach to customisation, enhancing international competitiveness.EngProg\
