Optimal Power Flow (OPF) software has become one of the most essential tools for both electrical power systems planners and operators. One of the main uses for OPF in the operation of power systems is during the dispatch process. Current OPF packages can not easily take electro-mechanical transient and oscillatory stability into consideration. There are two main reasons why this has been the case to-date:i) The computational load that is required for the necessary calculations to determine system stability for a given power system operating point across a reasonable number of contingencies using traditional methods is very high.ii) The optimisation algorithms within most optimal power flow packages would be disrupted by the highly non-linear, discontinuous and multi-modal problem space that represents the electro-mechanical transient and oscillatory stability problem.This proposal addresses these issue by researching new ANN screening filters to provide on-line stability inputs to the OPF based sheduler/dispatcher and, also, considers improving the optomisation mechanism within OPF by proposing a hydrib ANN/GA scheme
