Summary on Grant Application Form
A substantive programme of laboratory testing using stress path triaxial cells fitted with piezoceramic bender elements and local strain measurement is proposed. Comparison of the very small strain shear stiffnesses GO and EO of natural soft Bothkennar clay tested after reconsolidation to its in-situ state, with that of reconstituted clay tested at similar states will permit the effects of structure to be evaluated.Progressive destructuring of Bothkennar clay by controlled shear and volumetric strains will establish whether GO and EO are sensitive measures of clay structure and the testing will also provide additional data for calibration of a constitutive model for destructuring of clays that is presently under development at Bristol. Comparison of laboratory GO with field data and comparisons of tests on different sample types will enhance our knowledge of the extend of destructuring due to sampling and testing.
