Summary on Grant Application Form |
The work proposes a novel approach to enable the dependence of the packing characteristics of particulate materials of any shape(s) and size(s) to be predicted when filling containers of arbitrary geometry. The key step involved inputting particle characteristics directly in a digital format and performing a stochastic simulation in a digital environment. In this way serious computational bottlenecks are eliminated to allow a desktop PC simulation to be created. The proposed methodology will be developed for 3D simulation, coded and tested experimentally for two types of particulates (aggregates and foodstuffs) provided by industrial participants. Considerations will also be given to predict hydraulic and mechanical properties of the structured packing.
