A collaborative research programme is proposed which offers opportunities for the materials processing industries to benefit from ultrasonically assisted forming operations. The study concentrates on a generic elasto-viscoplastic model material as a focus to define a new range of ultrasonics applications. The research tackles the serious limitations currently hampering exploitation of this technology by proposing a programme of fundamental mechanistic studies of the critical tool/material interfacial conditions to bring new knowledge to the area of ultrasonically assisted processing. The aim is to establish a definitive description of the contributions of stress superposition, friction vector effects and changes in the coefficient of friction, to the improved interfacial conditions arising from ultrasonic excitation of the forming tools. Finite element models will provide detailed deformation histories and will be validated by a series of upsetting and indentation experiments using plasticine as the model material. The understanding of critical interfacial conditions will result in optimisation of ultrasonic tools to maximise the benefits, leading to reduced process forces, improved tool wear and enhanced product quality.EngProg\
