It has already been established that several processes observed in human blood flow, including deterministic chaos, seem to have analogues in nonlinear dynamical systems. For example, the distribution of the blood can apparently be characterised by five oscillatory processes of widely differing frequency whose mutual couplings give rise to small time-variations of both frequency and amplitude. It is proposed to investigate the extent to which such behaviour, including these time-variations, can be modelled in terms of nonlinear dynamics and, in particular, to find out what useful diagnostic information can be extracted from measurements of the coupling strengths. It is already known that the respiratory/cardiac coupling can in principle yield useful information, but there are many other couplings also deserving to be explored. Recent work in Saratov showing that valuable insights can be obtained from measurements of cardiovascular data under slow parameter variation, and during relaxation following an impulsive perturbation, will be followed up and developed in quantitative detail. The research programme will involve cardiovascular measurements in Lancaster, Saratov and Ljubljana, analogue electronic modelling in Lancaster, numerical modelling in Lancaster and Pisa, and an attempt to develop approximate analytic theory in the NASA Ames Research Center.
