Summary on Grant Application Form
A linear tape open data storage system, proposed by major manufacturers, may be the global format of the future and a four-generation roadmap has been proposed taking the technology well into the next century. Predicted very high densities can only be achieved by use of multi-channel, narrow track, smaller read/write gap heads and high speed thinner, smoother magnetic coating tapes of different formulation. Higher sensitivity Giant Magneto-Resistive read sensors will eventually be required. These are sensitive to corrosion and wear; hence thin diamond-like-carbon coatings will be used, requiring a total change in tape technology. The tribology of these systems is unknown and cannot be predicted. Each factor makes triobological problems more acute (this is a major limiting factor in the development of the technology) and effects of each will be addressed in this programme. Specific mechanisms of wear and friction will be studied and identified for linear systems and related to effects on signal, mechanical performance and durability. The investigations will include the effects of media and a range of head materials, separately and in combination. External variables will be temperature, humidity, pressure and speed. A feature of the study is the extensive use of surface analysis.
