A new microplant method of measuring binary gas adsorption isotherms has been developed [Mason, G et al, Proc. Roy Soc 453A, 1569-1592 (1997)]. The measurements have much greater precision than those from previous methods. The capability of the current microplant will be extended to cover hydrocarbon gases which have large amounts of adsorption. The adsorption of ethane-ethylene and ethylene-isobutane mixtures on 13X molecular sieve will be measured and the results used to challenge existing theories of multicomponent adsorption. The time taken for composition perturbations to travel through the micro-plant adsorber will be measured for different perturbation compositions and the results analysed by the original procedure of van der Vlist and van der Meijden (V-M) [J Chromatogr. 79, 1-13 (1973)] and also by recent improvements of the method. Comparison of the true isotherms with those from these analyses should explain why the V-M analysis does not always work and allow best practice to be recommended.EngProg\
