We have recently experimentally shown that intrinsic Josephson effects can be observed in bridges patterned in mis-aligned thin films of T1-Ba-Ca-Cu-O. The junctions have characteristics voltage one order of magnitude higher than other non-intrinsic Josephson junctions. They are RC-limited to operation at 3.1THz, suggesting that they are very suitable for electronics applications in the THz frequency range.In this proposal we intend to develop these bridges with a view to application as both THz oscillators and X-band tuneable microwave devices. We will therefore measure the radiation emitted from our bridges in the 0.1-1THz region. We will also fabricate tuneable phase shifters and reasonators and measure the device performance and tuneability at around 10GHz.For successful development of these technologies the width of the bridge (in units of Josephson penetration depths) must be known. This can be inferred from measurements in high magnetic fields. For bridges which are much wider than the Josephson penetration depth, we will also study coupled fluxon flow modes, which are the possible basis of a mm-wave oscillator technology.
