Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is for the Visiting Fellow to visit the Principle Investigator for 3 months in the summer of 2000 to carry out collaborative research. He will also visit researchers in several other UK institutions in disciplines including Mathematics, Physics and Civil and Mechanical Engineering. The direct aim of the research is to come up with a coherent and quantitatively correct mathematical explanation of Mullin and Acheson's recent 'Indian rope trick' (IRT) experiment for a continuously flexible rod; specifically to improve the PI and VF's existing linearized analysis by considering nonlinear effects and more complex constitutive laws. A more general aim is to bring the Visiting Fellows's research expertise to the UK in order to develop new modelling, numerical and asymptotic understanding of rod dynamics and of parametric resonance in systems that are continuous in space and time.
