Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will apply the concepts of Bayesian statistics in order to estimate the effect of tunnel geometry on fire severity. Although there have been a small number of experimental tunnel fire tests in recent years, the influence of tunnel geometry has rarely been considered. The intention is to compare experimental fire data from fires in tunnels with experimental data from similar fires in the open and determine the heat release rate enhancement factor for each tunnel geometry. A Bayesian methodology will then be used to determine which geometrical factor has the greatest influence on heat release rate. The actual viaration of the heat release rate enhancement factor with this geometrical variable will then be determined by considering sets of experimental data, using Bayes theorem.Strenuous efforts will be made to disseminate the results of the research through concerences, journal publications and direct contact with fire brigades, tunnel operators, research centres, the health nad safety executive and other interested parties.
