The initial phase will investigate the reported various sulfonic acids as dopants, and solvents and coagulants which will achieve a suitable membrane morphology. Initial work will be carried out producing flat sheet membranes and characterising their gas transport behaviour. The next phase will select the most promising fabrication technique and adapt it to the production of hollow fibre membranes, which will be characterised in terms of gas permeability and selectivity to a range of pure gases and possibly gas mixtures. The spinning conditions will be systematically examined and the effect of changing processing parameters, such as spinning solution composition, coagulant composition (internal and external), extrusion rate, draw ratio, temperature, etc on hollow fibre mechanical properties and gas transport will be assessed. Post-trearment of polyaniline hollow fibre will be carried out by doping, de-doping and re-doping using various acids and bases. The conductive properties of polyaniline membranes will be examined with a view to enabling selective gas transport to be facilitated. The potential of a conductive gas-seperation membrane will be assessed for possible uses such as gas sensors.
