Summary on Grant Application Form
In the current EPSRC soft solids project (GR/L51034) we have made much more rapid progress than expected. In three papers in preparation or currently submitted for publication we describe a new theory which we call low frequency potential scattering theory (LFPST). This is a potential expansion based on iterative solutions of the Helmholtz equation, first discovered by Kleinman. In particular we have solved the transmission problem for scattering by two adjacent particles. This has given us a firm basis on which to proceed to the solution of the many particle scattering problem for interacting particles. We are already in a position to produce more accurate solutions to the Epstein-Carhart-Allegra-Hawley formulation and have code to do this. We know how to generalise the problem to high frequency scattering using a similar procedure and have compared our single particle solutions with experiment, demonstrating their accuracy. We wish to apply our newly discovered method to (a) the high frequency limit; (b) visco-inertial scattering; (c) gels; (d) to provide computer code in order to disseminate our solutions to other workers using ultrasound in the characterisation of soft solids and other particulate systems; (e) to disseminate our results to workers in other areas.
