Summary on Grant Application Form |
The generalised character theory of Hopkins, Kuhn and Ravenel relates the topology of classifying spaces of finite groups to the Galois theory of some very large and complicated rings. We propose to study a modified theory that relates topology to the Galois theory of extensions of number fields, which is much simpler. We will specialise to a situation where the relevant extensions are Abelian and can be analysed using class field theory and the arithmetic of elliptic curves.
