Summary on Grant Application Form
In the development of modern gas turbines, the need for improved cycle efficiency and emission performance have led to increases in the turbine inlet temperature but less air for combustor liner cooling. These changes have been facilitated by thermal barrier coatings and developments in cooling arrangements with emphasis on transpiration. However, there have not been similar developments in the measurement of surface temperature and heat flux or in the calculation methods used to support design. Measurements of wall temperature often rely on thermal paints with the inconvenience that temperatures can only be determined after completion of the combustor test. The proposed research will include the development of an optical method, using thermographic phosphors, to measure temperature and heat flux on sample surfaces with a range of cooling flow arrangements, as well as in a single sector of a Rolls Royce, Astec combustor operating at pressures up to 5 bars. Existing computational methods based on a state-of-the-art large eddy simulation technique will be extended to predict flow and heat transfer characteristics in the new combustor with the results compared to those obtained in the experiments.
