Summary on Grant Application Form
Many rheological phenomena are within the everyday experience of the general public, yet are not well understood. Rheology is a diverse discipline, not taught at school or explicitly in Universities. Awareness of the science is generally lacking, though its importance to modern manufacture and everyday life is great. This project sets out to rectify the position by inducing in the public an awareness of rheology, bringing the fascinating flow phenomena that arise in complex materials to general notice. The aim of the project is to take static and video sequences to demonstrate rheological phenomena or computer generated simulations. This material is to be Incorporated into two modern forms of electronic communication, the interactive PC-based multi-media CD and a World Wide Web source on the Internet. Recent advance in Information Technology has led to the rapid expansion of computer-based multimedia technology, which provides a more exciting, dynamic way of displaying information than traditional paper-based media. The public are becoming accustomed to interactive tough-screen systems with text, images and sound. Many modern multi-media systems have also incorporated animation and video. Target audiences include school pupils (age 12-18) and their parents, mangers and engineers in industry, and the wider general public. The audiences are to be reached through public lectures, the distribution of copies of the CD-ROM, direct access over Internet, and public demonstration in various science exhibitions and events.
