The concept of multi-topic Masterclasses for Year 8 pupils has been piloted successfully. Now, we aim to extend this innovative programme and develop a series of presentations designed to provide a broad, but focused programme. The bias lies with the Physical Sciences - but strong cross-disciplinary linkages to the Life Sciences, Modern Languages, Music and aspects of Social Science will be exploited. The main programme will comprise three workshops:(I) Is there anybody out there.........? Stars and Light. This Masterclass marries Astrophysics (What are Stars?) and Keele Observatory (How do you study them?), with Chemistry (What is Light and How Does it Travel?), Music (Celestial Prompts to Composition; from Holtz to Bowie), and Earth Sciences (Meteorites and Other Stellar Bodies).(II) Drip, Drip, Drip.... the Art and Science of Water. For this Masterclass, Chemistry (What is water?) and Earth Sciences (From Oceans to Frozen Wastes), will link with Modern Languages and Music for a Phonetic Dip into Fluid Notes followed by advice on 'How to survive with, and without, water.....'.(III) Hear no evil, See no evil ...... An Examination of the Senses. Here research links between Communication and Neuroscience (See it, Hear it), and Chemistry (Chemical Signals; The Shape of a Smell), will blend with a literary celebration of the senses and lead us on a murder tail (Crimes; How to Detect Them ?).Delivery, based around key-note lectures, hands-on demonstrations and small group workshops, will ensure maximum interaction between tutors and pupils. The programme is also designed to allow for, and encourage the participation of parents/ guardians in the evolution and delivery of this educational event.
