Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to study quantum fluids under the extreme conditions made possible by our existing refrigerator systems. The properties of superfluid helium-3 at temperatures well below the transition continue to provide surprises, associated with the very low density gas of quasiparticles which reveal the undamped behaviour of the condensate. Our specific plans include:1. Studies of the nucleation and the thermodynamic properties of both the B- and A-phases of superfluid helium-3 in the low temperature limit.2. Associated with these studies, the behaviour of the moving A-B boundary under controlled conditions.3. Vortex creation and shedding by a moving object in superfluid helium-3B.4. The behaviour of the Fermi gas of dilute helium-3 atoms dissolved in the superfluid helium-4 mechanical vacuum, when in a confined geometry at millikelvin temperatures.
